A-LEVEL CHEMISTRY CIE

Price:£325

Studying chemistry is a great introduction to all science and provides a powerful understanding of how the world is made up. Chemistry is literally the study of matter, how it changes, its composition as well as its structure and properties.

A Level Chemistry

Course code:9701

Delivery method: Online

Course duration: 24 Months, However, you can complete the course in less than a year.

Entry requirements: No prior qualification needed

Award achieved: CIE A Level Chemistry

Awarding body: CIE

Chemistry explores the fundamental building blocks of life. This course will explore physical chemistry, inorganic chemistry and organic chemistry.

You will study subjects like atomic structure, kinetics, periodicity, organic analysis and chromatography. Studying chemistry prepares you for further education, particularly if you want to work in medicine or become a scientist.

During this A-Level Chemistry course you will explore bonding, energetics, kinetics, thermodynamics, the periodic table, amino acids, proteins DNA and organic synthesis.

Upon successful completion of the exam and practical assessments (as administered by CIE) you will have achieved an internationally recognised CIE A-Level Chemistry.

Tutor support

Our A Level courses come with tutor feedback and support by email for 24 months. They will mark your TMAs and provide valuable guidance through any trickier parts of the course whenever you need it. You will also receive a study guide to help you with all aspects of studying, essay writing and general student skills.

  • Developing an enthusiasm for chemistry
  • Gaining holistic understanding of chemistry and all the interrelations
  • Understanding of the scientific method, and how science fits in with that and the wider contexts
  • Acquire a range of relevant scientific skills including evaluation methodology, evidence and data and resolving conflicting evidence.
  • Evaluating the role of the scientific community in validating new knowledge and ensuring integrity

The CIE A-Level Chemistry qualification is gained once all 5 exam papers are successfully completed. These exams are administered by CIE – assessment centre details will be included with your course, as well as practice papers so that you are more than prepared for your assessments. You will need to contact your local examination centre to work through your exam and practical exam requirements.

Register your exam now.

In addition, there will be a number of tutor marked assessments (TMAs) to ensure that you have a thorough understanding of the course materials, with the tutor sending comments to guide you through any areas of potential difficulty, as well as a range of self-assessments that are indicators that you understand the materials as you work through them. These are for your own information, and do not need to be shown to your course tutor.

Online

The content is all online and accessed via our Learning Management System (LMS).

The online e-book has many features that cannot be printed such as embedded videos, forums and interactive tests.

With the tutor support option there are Tutor Marked Assessments which you access and submit through the online system.

Course outline

This course has the following thematic content:

Atoms and forces
Matter is built from atoms interacting and bonding through electrostatic forces. The structure of matter affects its physical and chemical properties, and influences how substances react chemically.

Experiments and evidence
Chemists use evidence gained from observations and experiments to build models and theories of the structure and reactivity of materials.

Patterns in chemical behaviour and reactions

By identifying patterns in chemical behaviour we can predict the properties of substances and how they can be transformed into new substances by chemical reactions. This allows us to design new materials of use to society.

Chemical bonds
The understanding of how chemical bonds are made and broken by the movement of electrons allows
us to predict patterns of reactivity.

Energy changes
The energy changes that take place during chemical reactions can be used to predict both the extent and the rate of such reactions.

Exam Structure

Paper 1 Multiple Choice 1 hour
This paper consists of 40 multiple choice questions, 30 of the direct choice
type and 10 of the multiple completion type, all with four options. All questions
will be based on the AS Level syllabus content. Candidates will answer all
questions. Candidates will answer on an answer sheet. [40 marks] 15.5% of overall score.

Paper 2 AS Level Structured Questions 1 hour 15 minutes
This paper consists of a variable number of questions of variable mark value.
All questions will be based on the AS Level syllabus content. Candidates will
answer all questions. Candidates will answer on the question paper. [60 marks] 23% of overall score.

Paper 3 Advanced Practical Skills 2 hours
This paper requires candidates to carry out practical work in timed conditions.
Candidates will be expected to collect, record and analyse data so that they can
answer questions related to the activity. The paper will consist of two or three
experiments drawn from different areas of chemistry. Candidates will answer all
questions. Candidates will answer on the question paper. [40 marks] 11.5% of overall score.

Paper 4 A Level Structured Questions 2 hours
This paper consists of a variable number of free response style questions of
variable mark value. All questions will be based on the A Level syllabus but
may require knowledge of material first encountered in the AS Level syllabus.
Candidates will answer all questions. Candidates will answer on the question
paper. [100 marks] 38.5% of overall score.

Paper 5 Planning, Analysis and Evaluation 1 hour 15 minutes
This paper consists of a variable number of questions of variable mark value
based on the practical skills of planning, analysis and evaluation. The context
of the questions may be outside the syllabus content, but candidates will be
assessed on their practical skills of planning, analysis and evaluation rather than
their knowledge of theory. Candidates will answer all questions. Candidates will
answer on the question paper. [30 marks] 11.5% of overall score.
